Are Restaurants and Private Colleges Legally Required to Provide GF-Safe Food? | New GF Products

Hello Reader,

Welp, May is coming to an end, which means it’s officially a wrap on Celiac Disease Awareness Month.

But while the celebrations and celiac content may be slowing down, the gluten-free lifestyle never really gives us a break. ;-)

Now it’s time to look ahead to June… and I'm so excited to reveal my June Love Me Gluten Free box next week. ☀️

Please note we have only about 60 boxes left, so be sure to reserve one if you want one. They ship June 2–3.

The June box features:

  • 5 brands I've never featured before
  • 2 dad-founded businesses
  • 1 super fun Mystery Gift
  • Tons of easy, snackable finds (no cooking required!)

Goodbye to the May box (pictured below) — and get ready for a summer adventure to remember with June!

Yummy New Flavor Alert

Y’all know I’ve been a longtime fan of Crunchmaster crackers, and they’ve also been a longtime partner of Good For You Gluten Free.

While I still use and love their simple crackers the most, I always get excited when they come out with fun new flavors. I recently spotted the newer Pimento Cheese-inspired Savory & Sweet crackers at my local Target and had to grab a box.

They’re savory, slightly sweet, super crunchy, and totally snackable. I think they’d be delicious on their own or paired with cheese slices or a fun spread.

I also used them in my latest Instagram video, where I shared the protein snack boxes I assembled for the week.

Your Legal Rights with Celiac Disease Explained

This week on the podcast, I interviewed one of my new favorite people: Mary Vargas, an attorney specializing in disability rights who helps people with celiac disease and food allergies better understand when the law does — and doesn’t — protect them.

Have you ever wondered:
• Is a restaurant legally required to provide a safe gluten-free meal?
• What obligations does your workplace have?
• What about colleges, summer camps, amusement parks, and more?
• And do the same protections apply if you’re self-diagnosed gluten intolerant and don’t have a formal celiac diagnosis?

Mary and I discuss all of this ... and then some.

This conversation was eye-opening, empowering, and honestly something I think everyone in our community should hear. I hope you’ll take a moment to listen and better understand your rights, protections, and where the law currently stands.

Listen on my blog or wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Does Everyone Think They're a Nima Expert?

I wanted to pop in this week to briefly talk about Nima. For those unfamiliar, Nima is a portable device that allows you to test food for hidden gluten. When something feels too good to be true, or you’re uncertain whether a meal is really safe, it can be a helpful tool for decoding what exactly is in your food.

But wow … some people online have made criticizing this device their entire personality, and some even shame people for using it.

Nima absolutely has valid limitations and isn't for everyone. It’s expensive. It has to be used properly. It’s not perfect. And I don’t think every person with celiac disease needs or would benefit from one.

My honest take? You’re not helping our community by shaming someone for using it. Some people need it to feel confident eating out. Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean others shouldn't.

On top of that, Nima has published third-party research and validation studies if you're willing to look past the noise, naysayers, and hot takes to do your own research and make your own decision on whether the device is something you want or need.

Visit Nima's new website to view all the research. I also encourage you to read my article -- What You Need to Know about Nima Before You Buy. I have followed the brand since its inception and can help you weigh the pros and cons.

And if you're scratching your head, wondering, wait, Nima is back, make sure you read my latest article on Nima's return to the scene earlier this year.

And one more thing while I’m on the topic of Nima. A lot of people mistrust Trader Joe’s gluten-free labels - I don't understand why. Trader Joe's must meet the same FDA gluten-free labeling standards as every other company. Trader Joe’s is not above the law. Just thought I'd share some TJ-Nima tests from the past ... and you can see more TJ-Nima tests here. Lots of Nima smiles...

That's all I have for this week - see you next Friday!

Sincerely,

Jenny

Hello Reader, Memorial Day weekend is here (in the US), which means summer is unofficially kicking off. ☀️ More travel. More BBQs. More road trips. More “let’s just grab something quick” moments. And while summer is supposed to feel fun and carefree, I also know this season can throw a lot of curveballs at those of us living gluten-free. Routines go out the window. You're eating out more. People hand you mystery burgers without buns and say, “I think it’s gluten-free?” So here are a few...

Hello Reader, Fourteen years into living with celiac disease, and somehow, this never gets easier. I’m writing you from a business conference. When I registered, they asked about food allergies, and I clearly marked mine on the form, thinking that would be enough. But once I got here? There really wasn’t food for me. I’ve been in this situation enough times to know what to do. I opened the Find Me Gluten Free app, found a nearby spot with GF options, and left the conference to get myself...

Hello Reader, Every time a new Love Me Gluten Free box goes out into the world, I get a little nervous. It’s such a strange feeling. On the one hand, I’m so proud of what I’ve created and curated… and on the other, it feels like I’m putting a piece of myself out there, wondering what everyone will think. If you’ve ever created something and shared it publicly, you probably know exactly what I mean. That said… this May box? She’s a keeper!! I leaned more savory this month after last month’s...
