Does Birth Order Dictate Whether You'll Have Celiac? | Savory S'mores | Quinoa Beer?

Hello Reader,

There are a lot of new gluten-free friends joining our community this week—hi and welcome! 👋

It's Celiac Disease Awareness Month, and that means there are a lot of giveaways tailored for us!

We just wrapped up the WOW Cookies + Love Me Gluten Free box giveaway (congrats to Angela G. from Thornton, CO), and there are two incredible giveaways you can enter right now:

The Schar Celiac Cruise giveaway (yes, a cruise!!) 🚢

The BFree Bed & Breakfast weekend getaway 🛏️

I've donated 3-month Love Me Gluten Free subscriptions as runner-up prizes to both giveaways, and I’d be thrilled to see someone from our community win— be sure to enter both!

Now let's get to the news of the week...

Does Birth Order Affect Celiac Disease?

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital are studying how genetics and environmental factors influence the development of celiac disease in high-risk children—specifically, those who carry the HLA-DQ2 or DQ8 “celiac genes.”

At the recent Digestive Disease Week conference, they presented new findings suggesting that certain environmental exposures may play a role in triggering the onset of celiac disease.

After analyzing data from 423 genetically at-risk children, they uncovered several interesting patterns:

  1. Breastfeeding in the first 6 months may offer protection against developing celiac disease.
  2. Higher gluten intake between 7–15 months was associated with an increased risk.
  3. Girls were more likely than boys to develop celiac disease.
  4. Older siblings were more likely to be diagnosed with celiac, suggesting that birth order could influence risk.

You can dive deeper into these findings via the Celiac Disease Foundation and explore what this research could mean for prevention and early intervention.

Savory S'mores

It’s almost Memorial Day, and that means the BBQ - and s'mores - season has officially begun.

This year, we’re skipping the sticky-sweet stuff and going savory. Yep, savory s’mores are a thing—and I’m here for it.

All you need is:

  • Babybels or mini Brie
  • Fig jam (or any jam you love)
  • A sturdy gluten-free cracker (I used Crunchmaster, who sponsored the recipe)
  • Plus, this adorable portable campfire I grabbed on Amazon

This combo hits all the right notes: salty, sweet, melty, and crunchy. I made them with my cheese-loving daughter, and we had a blast. Watch us make them in this Instagram video—you might never go back to marshmallows again.

Memorial Day Munchies?

I’m a sucker for a good crunchy snack, so I had to share a few favorites I’ve been loving lately!

Remember bagel chips? It’s been a while, right? Well, The Greater Knead is bringing them back—crunchy, delicious, and totally gluten-free (and free from the top 9 allergens, too!). BTW, they also recently reformulated their frozen pretzel bites, and let me tell you—they nailed it!

👉 The code LOVEGREATERKNEAD will get you 20% off any order at thegreaterknead.com - enjoy!

Bagel chips aren’t the only snack bringing back memories…

You know what else makes me nostalgic for my pre-celiac days? Cheese balls! I used to love them, but after going gluten-free, I gave them up because they had too many questionable ingredients.

The Good Crisp Company has created certified gluten-free cheese balls made with ingredients you can actually pronounce—and they're so fun and tasty. Cheese balls are officially back on the table!

👉 The code LOVECHEESEBALLS will get you 20% off any order at thegoodcrispcompany.com - check out their full line-up of clean-ingredient chips, too!

❗If you use the provided coupon codes to order any of these products, send me your receipt. I have a thank-you gift for you.

New in Stores!

Just letting you know that two of our gluten-free faves are hitting major store shelves - go treat yourself!

Feel Good Foods Mini Pizza Bagels are now available at select Target stores.

Ethel’s is now found at Walmart stores nationwide, in select Costco stores, and I spotted the new cookie line-up at Sprouts.

Quinoa Beer?🍺

Meet Meli, the first 100% quinoa-based beer brewed in the U.S.—because, of course, a Harvard/MIT grad figured out how to turn quinoa into booze. It’s naturally gluten-free and has zero added sugar. I haven't tried it yet, but you better believe it’s on my gluten-free bucket list.

Have a great holiday weekend, friends!

Sincerely,

Jenny

Hello Reader, I recently spotted a certified gluten-free product (GFCO certified!) that also had a label saying, "May contain wheat." Wait… what? Turns out, the product is made in a shared facility—not on shared equipment—and the manufacturer added the warning as a legal precaution. I spoke with the brand owner, who assured me the product tests below 10 ppm of gluten, which meets GFCO’s strict standards (stricter than the FDA's 20 ppm!). She’s planning to change the label to say,...

Hello Reader, I wanted to drop a few exciting updates into your inbox mid-week. First off, people in gluten-free land have lost their minds at the idea that Cheez-Its are coming out with a gluten-free version of its beloved cracker. Yes, it's exciting news when large companies make products for us and finally recognize the importance of our small but mighty community. However, the news was not earth-shattering for me, as I was like, "Where have you been this whole time?" Image credit to a...
