New Research on Shared Fryers Sparks Controversy and Drama

A new study published by the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) is stirring up quite a bit of controversy in the gluten-free community.

Researchers tested 98 samples of French fries and tortilla chips prepared in shared fryers at restaurants and found that 94% of the samples collected contained less than 20 ppm of gluten. Six samples exceeded that threshold, and all six were French fries.

So, does this mean shared fryers are safe for people with celiac disease? Not so fast.

Here are my thoughts:

1. I'm not changing my dining habits. This study has too many limitations and unanswered questions to convince me that eating from a shared fryer is safe. It's still a risk I'm not willing to take. But does it give me a little peace of mind knowing that if I accidentally eat fries from a shared fryer, I might be okay? Yes.

2. We need more research, not less. I'm glad the CDF is asking these questions, even when the answers make us uncomfortable. I've seen people criticizing the CDF for publishing this study, and I've received criticism for sharing it myself on Instagram. But since when did we decide that research should only be published when it confirms what we already believe? That's not how science works.

3. There's room for nuance. Living with celiac disease comes with a tremendous mental burden. We all make decisions about risk every day, and those decisions aren't always easy. This study doesn't give us a green light to eat from shared fryers, but it does challenge us to think critically about the findings and what they might mean for each of us.

Here's where I stand: I won't be ordering fries from a shared fryer anytime soon. But I'm also not going to ignore research because the findings don't fit the narrative.

👉 I spent hours digging into this study, reviewing earlier shared-fryer research, and putting together a comprehensive article explaining what we know, what we don't know, and what these findings actually mean.

If you're confused, concerned, or just curious, I hope you'll read it. You deserve the full picture, not just the headlines or influencer outrage. Read it here.

A Fun Fall Recipe 🍂

I love pasta so much, and when I was diagnosed with celiac disease over 14 years ago, I remember thinking pasta was going to be one of the hardest things to give up.

Thankfully, gluten-free pasta has come a LONG way!

One brand that takes me back is Taste Republic. It tastes like real, homemade pasta. You might even forget you're gluten-free for a brief moment while eating it.

Today, I wanted to share a delicious fall recipe made with Taste Republic's gluten-free linguine: Roasted Butternut Squash and Feta Pasta Bake. It's warm, cozy, and so good you might not want to share! (GET THE RECIPE)

And if you haven't tried Taste Republic yet, I've got a $4 off coupon for you!

One more thing: Keep an eye out for Taste Republic's new bright blue packaging. I spotted it at Whole Foods!

Two Recalls (Both in Canada)

One Degree Organic Foods has recalled certain packages of its Sprouted Whole Wheat Flour in Canada because of what regulators describe as a "misleading gluten-free claim." The Canadian Food Inspection Agency hasn't explained exactly how the incorrect claim appeared, but we do know that sprouted wheat still contains gluten and is not safe for people with celiac disease. See the official recall notice for affected products.

Soup Time French Onion Soup has been recalled in Canada because it contains undeclared wheat. The affected product was sold online and in Alberta, and one reaction has been reported. If you purchased this soup, check the official recall notice for the UPC and affected products.

As always, thanks for being here and letting me share my gluten-free world with you. ❤️

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Jenny
