The Struggles of Traveling With Celiac ✈️ | 5 Must-Have Travel Foods

Hello Reader,

I'm traveling this week to a professional subscription box conference - yes, it's a thing! I can't wait to learn from the experts.

But of course, whenever we travel with celiac disease, there are several things we have to do that other people don't have to worry about.

  1. We have to call ahead and ask about food accommodations, if any.
  2. We have to pack extra food... because we can't rely on others.
  3. We have to research nearby restaurants and grocery stores.

It's exhausting, but par for the course when you follow a strict, medically necessary gluten-free diet.

I, of course, emailed the organizers to ask about food accommodations weeks ago. I learned that there will be a buffet for breakfast and lunch with "gluten-free options, including fruit."

I won't know how safe I feel eating off the buffet until I get there, but I have a feeling I'll be sorting out my own meals this week.

I've been doing this for 13 years, so I know the drill and have stopped stressing about it. I just bring along plenty of dehydrated meals and healthy snacks. I know never to rely on strangers to get this right. I also know I need to be well-fueled for the long days, and I won't have time to scramble for food.

Here's what I'm bringing with me:

Sweet Loren's makes tasty and portable breakfast biscuits that pair perfectly with a cup of coffee. These will come in handy when I'm looking for a small bite to eat each morning. You can use the code LOVEMEGF15 for 15% off any order at sweetlorens.com.

Good To-Go has several dehydrated breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I will share more about these meals in a few weeks, but you can check out Good To-Go online in the meantime. A special coupon for our community is coming soon (hint, hint).

Fruit Bliss figs and apricots are essential when I crave a sweet-but-healthy snack. What I love about Fruit Bliss is how squishy they are. That's because, unlike traditional dried fruits, Fruit Bliss fruits are dried and then rehydrated to give them that perfect taste and texture. While I don't have a coupon for you, you can sign up for their newsletter at fruitbliss.com and get 20% off any purchase.

TruBar protein bars are certified gluten-free and delicious! I'm loving the new Strawberry Shorty Got Cake flavor. It has chunks of freeze-dried strawberries in it.

Lorissa's Kitchen meat sticks are top-nine allergen-free and are perfect for when I'm craving a savory protein snack. I'm sticking a bunch of sticks in my purse and suitcase.

✈️ Pro Tip for Gluten-Free Travelers

If you're traveling internationally this summer, you're going to want to internalize this pro tip...

You likely pre-ordered a gluten-free meal, and in most cases, there will be a meal waiting for you. But don’t just cross your fingers and hope for the best.

The moment you board your flight, politely flag down a flight attendant, let them know you ordered a gluten-free meal, and share your seat number. Ask them to double-check that they have a meal for you and to be sure to reserve it for YOU and no one else.

Why go through the trouble? People love asking for gluten-free meals mid-flight, even if they didn’t pre-order one. There's a real chance someone else will get handed your safe meal… and you’ll be left with nadda. Claim that meal ASAP - and emphasize to the flight attendant that it shouldn't be given to someone else requesting the gluten-free meal you took the time to reserve.

Which One is Gluten-Free?

Can you tell which of these pizzas is gluten-free? One is safe, the other is definitely not—but the packaging looks nearly identical.

This tip came from a sharp-eyed reader (thank you!), and it’s a great reminder: Brands need to do a better job differentiating their gluten-free products.

Got a tip or near-miss to share? Send it my way so we can help keep our gluten-free community safe and informed.

Have a great week, friends. Catch you on Friday!

Sincerely,

Jenny

Hello Reader, I recently spotted a certified gluten-free product (GFCO certified!) that also had a label saying, "May contain wheat." Wait… what? Turns out, the product is made in a shared facility—not on shared equipment—and the manufacturer added the warning as a legal precaution. I spoke with the brand owner, who assured me the product tests below 10 ppm of gluten, which meets GFCO’s strict standards (stricter than the FDA's 20 ppm!). She’s planning to change the label to say,...

Hello Reader, I wanted to drop a few exciting updates into your inbox mid-week. First off, people in gluten-free land have lost their minds at the idea that Cheez-Its are coming out with a gluten-free version of its beloved cracker. Yes, it's exciting news when large companies make products for us and finally recognize the importance of our small but mighty community. However, the news was not earth-shattering for me, as I was like, "Where have you been this whole time?" Image credit to a...
