Why I Was Wrong About These 3 Gluten-Free "Rules"

Hello Reader,

Last week, I shared three really stupid ways I've accidentally glutened myself. 😅

Your responses were fun to read, as many of you replied with your own stories. As it turns out, many of us have bought the wrong version of a product.

I mentioned how I've been confused by Goodles, Bob's Red Mill, and Van's Waffles, since they all make a gluten-free and gluten-full version, but you all added even more to my list - spot the differences?

Be careful out there...

3 Gluten-Free "Rules" I No Longer Believe

This week, I want to share three "rules" I used to follow that only made my gluten-free life harder than it needed to be.

(1) I avoided all oats -- even certified gluten-free oats.

I was convinced oats weren't safe because of all the scary things I read online from influencers and so-called "experts" who spread misinformation.

The truth is that most people with celiac disease can safely eat certified gluten-free oats, and only a small percentage react to the oat protein, avenin.

I've found that many people who think they can't tolerate oats may actually be dealing with IBS, sensitivity to the fiber in oats, or another digestive issue.

For me, avoiding oats was completely unnecessary, and I'm glad I gave them another chance.

Oats make gluten-free baked goods taste better, add fiber and nutrients to my diet, and make life a bit easier since oats are in a lot of GF products.

(2) I avoided products made in shared facilities with wheat.

I used to panic whenever I saw a statement like, “Made in a facility that also processes wheat.”

What I didn’t understand is that many labeled, and even certified, "gluten-free" products are safely made in shared facilities using strict cleaning procedures and testing. Those advisory statements are only relevant for people with true wheat allergies, not celiac disease.

Avoiding every product with that statement made my world much smaller than it needed to be.

(3) I labeled foods as “good” and “bad.”

Once I removed gluten from my diet, it became easy to keep adding more food rules.

No sugar. No processed foods. No this. No that.

Before long, I realized I wasn’t just avoiding gluten... I was trying to eat “perfectly.”

Today, I focus on eating a balanced diet, but I also leave room for foods that simply bring me joy. I stopped judging myself - and others - for wanting to eat a cupcake.

Your turn: I’d love to hear from you. In what ways have you overrestricted your diet beyond necessary?

Hello Reader, This week definitely reminded me that running a small business is an emotional roller coaster. We had a customer service situation that required a lot of care. As always, my team and I did everything we could to make it right. And honestly? Ninety-nine percent of people were incredibly kind, understanding, and gracious. It's that other 1% that somehow manages to live rent-free in my head. Thankfully, this community reminds me every day why I love what I do. For every difficult...
