I've got a lot to talk about this week, including a recall, some pumpkin finds (and a recipe!), and why you can trust gluten-free labeling at Trader Joe's (and shouldn't believe everything you see on the internet).

🚨 Gluten-Free Products Recalled for... Gluten

GF Blends has recalled specific lots of Truly AIP All Purpose Flour, Truly AIP Bread Mix, and EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Flat Bread Pizza Mix after testing found gluten levels significantly above the FDA's 20 ppm limit for foods labeled gluten-free.

The issue was traced to a plantain flour supplier. The plantain flour itself had been labeled and certified gluten-free, but later testing found it contained gluten.

The affected products were sold nationwide through September 12. Thankfully, no adverse health effects have been reported.

If you have one in your pantry, check the lot numbers and best-by dates in the official recall notice before using it.

And please know that gluten-free recalls like this are extremely rare. This is what a recall system is supposed to do when something goes wrong: identify the problem and get the affected products off the market.

Confession: I Trust Trader Joe's Labeling

It's officially pumpkin season at Trader Joe's, so naturally I stocked up on some GF fall goodies. 🎃 I'll share my finds below, but first...

I keep seeing people say that Trader Joe's gluten-free labeling can't be trusted, or that people with celiac disease shouldn't eat their products because they're not certified gluten-free.

I love a good hot take as much as anyone, but the facts don't support this Internet lore.

Trader Joe's doesn't operate under a different set of gluten-free labeling rules. If an FDA-regulated packaged food is labeled “gluten-free,” it has to meet the FDA's gluten-free labeling requirements. Third-party certification adds another layer of oversight, but it's voluntary and isn't required for a product to be labeled gluten-free.

Can things occasionally go wrong? Absolutely. The recall I shared above is a perfect example. But recalls are rare.

Plus, Trader Joe's private labels most of their products. The Trader Joe's name on the package doesn't necessarily tell you who actually made what's inside.

Take their Gluten Free Egg Fettuccine. I've long suspected it's made by Taste Republic because the products are remarkably similar. And let's just say I have my sources to be pretty sure about this one. 😉

And guess what? Taste Republic is certified gluten-free. So while the Trader Joe's version doesn't carry that certification logo, it's being made by a manufacturer that clearly knows a thing or two about safely producing gluten-free pasta.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest... let's talk pumpkin season, because Trader Joe's is the BEST in the fall. 🎃 😂
